President Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed departed on Sunday afternoon for an official state visit to Sri Lanka, signaling a renewed push to strengthen diplomatic and economic engagement between the two nations.
The visit, held from May 3 to 6 at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, will see high-level discussions focused on expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, including education, vocational training, governance, and economic development.
According to officials, both leaders are expected to witness the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding aimed at enhancing collaboration and unlocking new opportunities for joint initiatives. The agreements are anticipated to reinforce institutional partnerships and facilitate long-term development goals shared by both countries.
As part of the itinerary, President Muizzu will also participate in the Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum, a key platform designed to strengthen private sector ties and promote cross-border investment. He is further scheduled to engage with the Maldivian community residing in Sri Lanka, underscoring the importance of diaspora relations in bilateral diplomacy.
The visit builds on momentum from President Disanayaka’s state visit to the Maldives in July 2025, which coincided with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Established on July 26, 1965, Maldives–Sri Lanka relations have historically been defined by close cooperation and mutual strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region.
Analysts view the latest engagement as part of a broader effort to deepen regional partnerships and position both countries for greater economic resilience amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
