President Muizzu pushes start of Segment Two to deliver wider Fish Market to MPL road by Ramadan

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 5, 2025

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that work is being fast tracked to start and complete Segment Two of the Malé road redevelopment project, covering the stretch from the Fish Market area to the Malé Port area before the upcoming month of Ramadan. Speaking to residents of Maafannu, the President said this phase is a key element of his pledge to rebuild Malé’s road network into a modern and pedestrian friendly system.

He explained that the northern side roadwork has been contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company. Segment One, which includes the area in front of the Maldives Monetary Authority, has already been asphalted and completed. Segment Two will now widen the corridor running from the Fish Market to the MPL area.

The President noted that once the works are finished, the entire road will feature two lanes in each direction, easing congestion and improving overall mobility in the capital. He reiterated that completing this expanded stretch before Ramadan is a priority.

President Muizzu acknowledged that construction activities may cause temporary inconvenience. He stressed that any project offering long term public benefit, especially for families and children, must not be dismantled or compromised for short term ease. He cited the area in front of Sultan Park as an example, describing it as a well loved public space where families gather during holidays, and said reopening that road prematurely would not be a responsible decision.

The President reaffirmed that the ongoing reconstruction is aimed at creating safer, more resilient and better organised roads across Malé, establishing a people centred urban environment aligned with his broader development vision.
