President Muizzu reaffirms commitment to nationwide development

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 29, 2025

In a recent address to the residents of HA. Maarandhoo, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu outlined an ambitious development agenda aimed at revitalizing the island’s infrastructure and services. This announcement was part of his ongoing tour of several islands in the North Thiladhunmathi Atoll.

During the meeting, President Muizzu emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing key areas such as sports facilities, harbor development, coastal erosion, infrastructure, waste management, social services, healthcare, and education. He assured residents that the administration is dedicated to fulfilling the promises made during the presidential campaign, with plans to implement these initiatives in 2025 and expedite projects delayed from the previous year.

Acknowledging past challenges where development projects were initiated but subsequently halted, President Muizzu explained that the current administration has identified strategies to resume these works. He specifically assured residents of a comprehensive solution to the harbor issues and pledged to address coastal erosion, school space constraints, and improvements in healthcare services. He stated that work would resume in the near future.

In a significant move to enhance connectivity, the President announced that HA. Maarandhoo would be integrated into the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) scheduled ferry service before Ramadan. This integration is expected to improve transportation and accessibility for the island’s residents.

As part of his visit, President Muizzu also oversaw the handover of an ATM installation project from the Bank of Maldives (BML) to the Maarandhoo Island Council, aiming to improve financial services on the island.

Addressing concerns about the frequency of official visits, the President emphasized that these trips by himself and Cabinet members should not be viewed as wasteful expenditure. He pointed out that the real waste stems from the cost of delayed action and indicated that meeting with local institutions alongside relevant ministers facilitates swift resolution of issues.

This visit underscores the administration’s proactive approach to engaging with local communities and addressing their development needs directly.
