President Muizzu Reaffirms Quranic Education as Core of National Identity

By Ahmed Ashraf Published October 12, 2025

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that, as an Islamic nation, the Maldives must place the highest priority on the recitation, memorisation, and propagation of the Holy Quran — calling it the cornerstone of national identity and moral strength.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 37th National Quran Recitation Competition at the Islamic Centre, President Muizzu underscored his administration’s commitment to advancing Quranic education and nurturing a new generation of Maldivians deeply rooted in Islamic values.

“The recitation of the Holy Quran must be a source of pride for every child in this nation,” the President declared, urging parents, educators, and institutions to collectively strengthen efforts to inspire love for the Quran among youth. He emphasised that promoting Quranic learning is not merely a religious duty, but a foundation for the country’s unity, discipline, and progress.

Reflecting the President’s vision, the government has elevated the National Quran Recitation Competition to the most prestigious platform of its kind in the Maldives. Under a recent presidential directive, the event introduced a new grand prize for the overall winner and increased awards for other top participants, ensuring greater recognition for excellence in Quranic recitation.

This year’s competition, inaugurated on 18 September, saw over 1,000 participants representing 119 institutions — including councils, schools, Quran centres, and universities — demonstrating the growing nationwide enthusiasm for Quranic education.

The President, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, and cabinet ministers, presented the top awards at the ceremony. The event symbolised not only the culmination of weeks of dedicated competition but also a renewed national commitment to strengthening Islamic scholarship and values across all communities.

Through such initiatives, President Muizzu continues to champion a vision that places faith, education, and youth empowerment at the heart of the Maldives’ future.
