Pediatrician Dr Ahmed Faisal has issued a strong public warning over a sharp rise in influenza in Malé, reporting that some children are experiencing such severe body aches that they are unable to walk. In a message urging immediate vigilance, he called on families to get their children vaccinated without delay to curb the accelerating spread of the virus.
The warning comes as healthcare providers in the capital continue to observe a rapid uptick in flu cases, reflecting the seasonal rise typically seen in densely populated urban areas. Clinics in Malé have noted a growing number of young patients presenting with high fever, muscle pain and significant weakness, heightening concerns among parents and doctors.
Dr Faisal also highlighted a parallel increase in dengue fever across Kaafu Atoll, naming Himmafushi and Maafushi as particularly affected islands. Dengue activity historically intensifies during wet periods, creating ideal conditions for mosquito breeding and transmission.
Health officials emphasize two urgent protective steps: flu vaccination for all eligible individuals and strict mosquito bite prevention. Families are advised to use repellents, eliminate standing water, and seek medical attention swiftly if symptoms such as persistent fever, vomiting, rash or unusual fatigue appear.
Health officials continue to urge the public to remain alert as both influenza and dengue circulate simultaneously, raising the risk for vulnerable groups including children, pregnant women and the elderly.
