President Muizzu renews call to safeguard the ocean that sustains us all

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 10 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to ocean conservation, stressing that healthy oceans are essential to the country’s economy, food security and environmental sustainability.

In a message marking World Ocean Day, President Muizzu said the connection between the Maldivian people and the ocean is deeply personal, noting that the health of marine ecosystems directly affects livelihoods and the nation’s future.

The President highlighted ongoing government efforts to strengthen ocean protection through sustainable fisheries, expanded marine research, reef health monitoring, coral restoration and rehabilitation programmes, as well as science-based measures aimed at building resilience against climate change.

He said these initiatives are focused on safeguarding the country’s marine ecosystems while ensuring the wellbeing of present and future generations.

President Muizzu also warned of growing environmental challenges, including rising ocean temperatures, coral bleaching and coastal erosion. He stressed that addressing these threats requires greater urgency and stronger international cooperation.

Calling for collective action, the President urged countries and stakeholders to work together to protect the oceans, describing them as a vital resource that sustains communities, economies and ecosystems around the world.

World Ocean Day is observed annually on June 8 to raise awareness about the importance of oceans and promote efforts to conserve marine resources.
