President Muizzu Steps In, Resolves Baibalaa Controversy with New Playground in Usfasgandu

By Hussain Shinan Published March 19, 2025

In response to public criticism over the placement of a Baibalaa playground in the Maafannu Cemetery, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works has successfully constructed a new Baibalaa playground at Usfasgandu, following direct instructions from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Baibalaa, a traditional outdoor sport traditionally played during Eid, involves two teams competing in a game similar to the Indian sport Kabaddi. The game is popular among the youth in the Maldives and has become a central part of community celebrations during the festive season.

Earlier this week, Male’ City Council set up a Baibalaa arena in the Maafannu Cemetery, sparking a wave of criticism on social media. Many citizens voiced their concerns over the decision, arguing that using the cemetery grounds for sporting activities was disrespectful to the sacred space. The public uproar led to the removal of the playground shortly after its installation.

Acknowledging the concerns of the community, President Muizzu instructed the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works to find an alternative location for the playground. In response, the ministry acted swiftly, starting work on the new Baibalaa playground at Usfasgandu early yesterday morning. The project was completed by the evening, providing the city’s youth with a safe and respectful space to engage in their traditional sport.

The Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works emphasized that the President is committed to addressing the public’s concerns and ensuring that the government’s actions reflect the needs and voices of the people. In particular, the government has placed a high priority on providing better opportunities for the youth, a key policy focus for President Muizzu’s administration.

The swift action to build the new Baibalaa playground is seen as part of the government’s continued efforts to engage with the public and deliver solutions that are both timely and responsive to community needs.
