President Muizzu to visit Sri Lanka for high-level talks and key agreements

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 30, 2026

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is set to undertake a state visit to Sri Lanka from 3 to 6 May 2026, in a move aimed at deepening diplomatic, economic, and regional cooperation between the two Indian Ocean neighbours.

The visit comes at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and will see high-level discussions focused on expanding collaboration across multiple sectors. According to the Maldivian President’s Office, both leaders are expected to oversee the signing and exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding, signalling renewed momentum in bilateral engagement.

During the visit, President Muizzu will hold official talks with President Dissanayake and meet senior Sri Lankan government officials. The discussions are expected to prioritise economic partnerships, connectivity, and development cooperation, reflecting the long-standing interdependence between the two countries.

President Muizzu will be accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, along with a delegation of Cabinet ministers and senior government officials, underscoring the importance Malé places on the visit.

The trip follows President Dissanayake’s visit to the Maldives in July 2025, which coincided with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. That milestone highlighted decades of close cooperation in areas such as trade, education, healthcare, and people-to-people exchanges.

Sri Lanka remains one of the Maldives’ key regional partners, historically serving as a vital hub for medical services, education, and logistics. Analysts view the upcoming visit as an opportunity to reinforce these ties while exploring new avenues of cooperation amid evolving regional dynamics in the Indian Ocean.

President Muizzu has repeatedly emphasised his administration’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with countries that contribute to the Maldives’ development, positioning this visit as part of a broader foreign policy push to enhance strategic alliances.
