The Ministry of Finance and Planning and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) have signed an agreement to develop a new airport in Alifu Alifu Atoll’s Mathiveri.
The memorandum of understanding was signed Tuesday during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Mathiveri as part of his atoll tour. MACL’s CEO and Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, signed on behalf of the company, while State Minister Hussain Imran represented the Finance Ministry.
Under the agreement, MACL will design, finance, and construct the new airport. The company will also reclaim land required for the project, including an additional 26.5 hectares adjacent to Mathiveri for residential development to support the island’s population growth.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Muizzu described the Mathiveri Airport project as one of his key campaign pledges. He said the facility would be financially viable, boost connectivity across the atoll, and create opportunities for the tourism sector.
The President further assured residents that the airport will be completed and operational within two and a half years.
