Protests or Publicity Stunt? MP Speaks Out

By Hussain Shinan Published 13 hours ago

Parliament Member Ibrahim Shujaau has alleged that ongoing protests organized by the Maldivian Democratic Party are driven by internal party interests rather than public grievances.

In a post shared on the social media platform X, the lawmaker claimed that the demonstrations taking place in Malé are primarily aimed at generating visibility for individuals contesting in the party’s upcoming internal elections.

Shujaau said the protests, which have been held nightly in the capital, are causing inconvenience to residents and disrupting daily life. He argued that the demonstrations are not a response to any alleged wrongdoing by the government, adding that there are no individuals currently being detained unjustly or subjected to political persecution.

He further stated that President Mohamed Muizzu is actively working to address areas that require improvement and enhance public services.

According to Shujaau, those participating in the protests are seeking to build political narratives within their own party by portraying themselves as having made sacrifices. He described the demonstrations as lacking a legitimate basis and criticized the impact they are having on the public.

The opposition MDP began its protest campaign in Malé last Wednesday, presenting a set of 12 demands to the government. Separately, the People’s National Front has also been holding protests in the capital.
