Swimmers have been given additional time to sign up for the Dhiraagu Malé Open 2026, with organisers extending the registration deadline to 9 August ahead of the country’s largest open-water swimming competition.
The annual event, organised by Swim Maldives with the support of Dhiraagu, is scheduled to take place at Rasfannu on 21 and 22 August, bringing together swimmers of all ages and skill levels from across the country.
Organisers said the deadline extension is intended to give more participants the opportunity to register and take part in the competition, which has become one of the Maldives’ flagship sporting events.
Registration remains open for the 1-kilometre, 500-metre and 250-metre individual races, as well as the newly introduced 500-metre team relay category. Interested participants can register online until 9 August.
Beyond competition, the Dhiraagu Malé Open also aims to encourage greater participation in open-water swimming while raising awareness about the importance of protecting the Maldives’ marine environment.
The event has grown steadily since its inception, attracting swimmers from across the Maldives. Last year’s edition saw around 350 competitors take to the water, with participants ranging from six years old to more than 70, highlighting the competition’s appeal across generations.
Open-water swimming has gained increasing popularity in the Maldives in recent years, with more community events encouraging participation in the sport while promoting healthy lifestyles and appreciation for the country’s unique marine environment.
Dhiraagu said its continued support for the event reflects the company’s commitment to promoting sports, wellness and community engagement through inclusive initiatives that bring people together.
