STELCO Stands by Transparency: April Discounts Given to Protect Citizens from Heatwave Costs

By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 10, 2025

In a continued effort to alleviate financial strain on Maldivian households, the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced that electricity bills for April 2025 will include discounts similar to those provided during Ramadan in March.

April, known for its intense heat, often sees a spike in electricity consumption as residents rely heavily on cooling appliances. Recognizing this, STELCO’s initiative aims to provide additional relief to citizens during this period.

“After the end of March (Ramadan month), a discount was also given on the April bills this year because April is typically a month when electricity bills are very high due to increased heat,” STELCO stated.

As a result, some customers may notice that their April bills remain consistent with March’s, despite variations in electricity usage. This consistency is attributed to the relief measures implemented to support households during the hotter months.

This move aligns with the government’s broader initiative to cap utility bills during Ramadan and beyond, ensuring that increased consumption does not lead to disproportionate financial burdens on citizens.

STELCO’s commitment to customer welfare is further exemplified by its proactive measures, including the formation of dedicated teams to enhance service quality amid rising electricity demand.

By extending discounts into April, STELCO demonstrates a continued dedication to supporting Maldivian households, ensuring that essential services remain accessible and affordable during periods of increased demand.
