STO assures stable onion supply, no price increase planned

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 6 hours ago

The State Trading Organization (STO) has assured consumers that onion prices at its outlets will remain unchanged despite recent price increases in the local market.

The assurance comes as onion prices in some shops have risen sharply, with retailers in certain areas selling onions for more than MVR 25 per kilogram.

Speaking to The Standard, an STO official confirmed that onions continue to be available through the company’s outlets at existing wholesale and retail rates. The official said there are currently no plans to increase prices and noted that STO maintains sufficient stock levels to meet demand.

According to STO, there are no supply shortages affecting onion availability. The company also stated that it is prepared to import additional quantities if necessary, as it has done in similar situations in the past, to ensure uninterrupted supply to consumers.

While market prices have increased significantly, STO continues to sell onions at MVR 13 per kilogram, offering consumers a more affordable alternative.

STO plays a key role in maintaining food security in the Maldives by importing and distributing a wide range of essential commodities, including staple food items. The company said its efforts are focused on ensuring essential goods remain readily available across the country at stable and affordable prices, particularly during periods of market volatility.
