Tourism media businessman Dr. Sunny Umar, also known as Hussain Sunny Umar of G. Maavani, Malé City, has been ordered into custody for 30 days by the Criminal Court in connection with multiple child sexual abuse allegations involving children from his wife’s family. The Prosecutor General’s Office confirmed that the remand request was submitted today under Article 30 and Article 33 of the Prevention of Sexual Abuse of Children Act, supported by Article 49 of the Constitution.
The court accepted the request and ordered Dr. Sunny to remain in police custody as investigators continue to gather evidence and victim statements. Authorities have stated that once the initial period expires, they plan to seek an extension to keep him detained until the trial concludes.
Police earlier revealed that Dr. Sunny was summoned to the Family and Child Protection unit immediately upon returning to Maldives after traveling abroad. His sudden departure to New Delhi had intensified suspicion that he was attempting to evade justice as accusations gained attention on social media.
Family sources say a total of five victims have now been identified, including two girls and one boy who were minors when the abuse occurred. Another woman is also reported to have been abused while she was under age.
Dr. Sunny is the owner of The Travel Guys Pvt Ltd which publishes prominent tourism magazines such as Travelution, Maldives Halal Travel, and The Island Post, while also running a travel agency under the Maldives Halal Travel brand. His reputation as a leading tourism promoter has collapsed as the growing case exposes shocking allegations behind his public persona.
With the Prosecutor General’s Office pushing for continued detention and an expanding victim list, public pressure for accountability remains high. The investigation now moves forward with the alleged offender behind bars and the nation watching closely for swift justice for the children involved.
