WAMCO’s Fahi Jeelu programme brings waste awareness into the classroom

By Hussain Shinan Published 6 hours ago

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has conducted a waste management awareness session for 84 Grade 2 students of Al-Madhrasathul Arabiyyathul Islamiyya, helping young students learn about responsible and safe waste practices.

The activity was held under WAMCO’s Fahi Jeelu initiative, which focuses on building awareness among school students about waste management and encouraging environmentally responsible habits from an early age.

During the programme, students were introduced to basic principles surrounding the safe handling and management of waste. The session was designed to present the subject in an accessible way for young children while helping them understand the role individuals can play in keeping their surroundings clean.

WAMCO also familiarised the students with the company’s work, providing information about its services and the operations involved in collecting and managing waste.

The programme forms part of WAMCO’s wider public awareness efforts, which seek to complement waste collection and management services with education on responsible disposal practices.

Engaging children is particularly important to long-term efforts to improve waste management, as habits surrounding littering, disposal and environmental responsibility can be developed from an early age and carried into households and communities.

Waste management remains a significant environmental challenge in the Maldives, where limited land availability and the dispersed nature of island communities create additional difficulties in collecting, transporting and processing waste.

Improperly discarded waste can also have consequences beyond residential areas, with plastics and other materials potentially entering the ocean and affecting beaches, reefs and marine ecosystems.

WAMCO, the state-owned company responsible for waste management services in several parts of the country, has been working both to strengthen its operations and increase public engagement on responsible waste practices.

The company has also been engaging with island councils as formal waste management services are expanded to additional communities. WAMCO recently held discussions with HDh. Nolhivaranfaru Island Council on existing waste challenges and preparations to introduce structured waste management services on the island.

Through initiatives such as Fahi Jeelu, the company is extending that effort into schools, with the latest session giving 84 young students an introduction to how waste is managed and why responsible disposal is important.
