“What Do You Think?” – Nasheed Teases 2028 Bid Amid Political Freefall

By Ahmed Ashraf Published June 4, 2025

In a surprising development, former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed his intention to contest the 2028 presidential election. This announcement comes amidst a backdrop of political instability and internal party conflicts that have characterized Maldivian politics in recent years.

Nasheed conveyed his intentions through a message sent to senior members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats, stating, “I am considering contesting. What do you think? Whatever response you give will not affect our relationship.”

Nasheed’s political journey has been tumultuous. After resigning from the presidency in 2012 amid allegations of a coup, he faced a 13-year prison sentence on terrorism charges—a conviction later overturned. He returned to politics as Speaker of Parliament in 2019 but resigned in 2023 following a no-confidence vote.

In 2023, Nasheed left the MDP after losing the party’s presidential primary to then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He subsequently formed The Democrats, a move that many believe contributed to the MDP’s defeat in the 2023 presidential election.

Despite initial enthusiasm, The Democrats struggled to gain political traction, failing to secure any seats in the 2024 parliamentary elections. This lack of success has led to defections, with several senior members, including Vice President Mohamed Shifaz and council member Ali Azim, rejoining the MDP.

Nasheed has recently advocated for a merger between the MDP and The Democrats, suggesting that such a union would be beneficial for the country’s political landscape. However, critics argue that this move is more about political survival than genuine reconciliation.

As the 2028 election approaches, Nasheed’s candidacy is poised to stir debate and division. While his supporters view him as a seasoned leader with a vision for the Maldives, detractors question his motives and the potential implications for the country’s democratic integrity.

The Maldives stands at a crossroads, and the electorate must carefully consider whether Nasheed’s return to the political arena represents a step forward or a regression into past political strife.
