Yellow alert issued as heavy rain and 45 mph winds target central Maldives

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 8 hours ago

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a Yellow Alert for the area stretching from Baa Atoll to Vaavu Atoll, warning of torrential rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds overnight.

The alert is in effect from 10:45 p.m. on 27 June until 2:45 a.m. on 28 June.

According to the MET Office, the affected region can expect torrential rain and thunderstorms, with wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph during squalls. The deteriorating weather is also likely to create rough sea conditions, particularly in and around the warned area.

Authorities advise the public, seafarers, and those travelling between islands to exercise caution while the alert remains in force. Small craft operators are urged to closely monitor the latest weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense thunderstorms.

The Maldives is currently experiencing the southwest monsoon season, which typically brings frequent showers, thunderstorms, and occasional periods of strong winds across the country.
