STELCO Unveils Gogoro Electric Motorcycles, Charging Ahead Towards Sustainable Transportation

By Hussain Shinan Published March 19, 2025

The State Electric Company (STELCO) has officially launched Taiwan’s renowned Gogoro electric battery cycle in the Maldives, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to promote sustainable, eco-friendly transportation.

During the launch, STELCO’s Managing Director Hussain Fahmy elaborated on the new initiative, stating that the electric vehicles (EVs) are designed to offer an accessible alternative to traditional modes of transport. To facilitate the widespread use of these vehicles, the company will install charging stations across various locations in Malé, allowing residents to easily charge their Gogoro motorcycles.

This new infrastructure is not only about providing an alternative mode of transport but also aligns with the Maldives’ long-term environmental goals. The initiative seeks to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and air pollution by encouraging the use of electric motorcycles, a cleaner alternative to conventional petrol-powered vehicles.

As part of the initiative, STELCO will offer test rides to the public, allowing residents to experience the benefits of electric motorcycles first-hand. Fahmy emphasized that this move is a step forward in the nation’s commitment to achieving 33% renewable energy by 2028, a goal that supports the Maldives’ broader vision for sustainability and environmental protection.

The introduction of the Gogoro electric battery cycle and the establishment of charging stations is a key part of the country’s ongoing efforts to provide cleaner transportation options and improve public health by reducing harmful emissions.

With this launch, STELCO hopes to encourage more Maldivians to adopt electric vehicles, driving the country closer to its sustainability targets while contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
