The Elections Commission (EC) has fined the Adhaalath Party MVR 25,000 after the party failed to keep proper records of how it spent its money.
The penalty stems from the party’s 2024 audit report, which was submitted to the EC last month.
According to the EC, the audit found that Adhaalath had not kept full details of all its expenditure. Article 41 of the Political Parties Act requires every party to keep a detailed record of everything it spends.
The auditor also flagged that the party had not submitted documents to back up the values it listed for some of its assets in 2024. As a result, those figures could not be verified.
Under the Act, parties must submit their financial and annual reports to the EC within the first three months of each year.
Adhaalath is not the only party to face action this year. Three months ago, the EC penalised three parties, including the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), for failing to submit their financial statements.
If Adhaalath does not pay the fine on time, the EC will take the case to court. The amount will also be deducted from the party’s share of the state budget allocated to political parties.
