Residents of Vilimalé now have access to the Malé Taxi Line service following the official launch of operations on the island, marking another step in efforts to improve public transportation across the Greater Malé Region.
The service was inaugurated during a ceremony held in Vilimalé attended by Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee, Vilimalé MP Mohamed Ismail, and senior officials from the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and the ministry.

MTCC announced that the service has commenced with an initial fleet of four vehicles, comprising two Changan Lumin electric cars and two SZO 7 models. The taxis will operate around the clock and follow the regulated fare structure established by the Ministry of Transport.
According to the company, the expansion is intended to provide residents with an additional transportation option that is reliable, safe and easily accessible at any time of the day.
The Malé Taxi Line was introduced as part of a broader initiative to address transportation challenges in the capital region, where demand for taxis has continued to rise in recent years. Since its launch in Malé, the service has become a popular alternative for commuters seeking predictable fares and app-based booking options.

MTCC noted that all vehicles operating under the service are fully electric, aligning with national efforts to promote environmentally friendly transportation and reduce carbon emissions.
The company said passenger safety and service quality remain central to the initiative. Drivers operating under the Malé Taxi Line were recruited through a structured selection process and provided with training before entering service.
Users can access the taxi service through the dedicated Malé Taxi Line mobile application or by calling the hotline number 1655.
The launch in Vilimalé comes as authorities continue efforts to strengthen connectivity and transportation services across the Greater Malé area, which includes Malé, Hulhumalé, Vilimalé and Velana International Airport.
With growing populations and increasing demand for transport services across the region, officials have repeatedly emphasized the need for modern, sustainable and technology-driven mobility solutions.
The introduction of the service in Vilimalé is expected to provide residents with greater convenience while supporting broader plans to modernize public transport in the capital region.
