MET warns of widespread heavy rain and possible flooding until November 11

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 3 hours ago

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has warned that widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and occasional heavy showers are expected across the country from November 7 to 11, 2026, as the Southwest Monsoon becomes more active.

According to the MET Office, the prevailing monsoon conditions are expected to bring unsettled weather to much of the Maldives over the next five days, with some islands potentially experiencing torrential rainfall.

The weather agency has also cautioned that intense downpours could trigger localized flooding, particularly in areas vulnerable to water accumulation.

With heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast to continue until Wednesday, November 11, the MET Office has urged residents and travellers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

The MET Office issued several weather alerts across the country early Saturday morning. Yellow Alerts were issued for torrential rain and thunderstorms from Haa Alifu to Baa Atoll between 2:30 am and 6:30 am, and from Kaafu to Vaavu Atoll between 3:00 am and 7:00 am. A further Yellow Alert covers Haa Alifu to Alif Dhaal Atoll from 6:30 am to 10:30 am. White Alerts were also issued for heavy rain and thunderstorms across northern, central and southern atolls earlier in the morning.

Residents and seafarers are urged to exercise caution, particularly in flood-prone areas, and follow the latest official weather advisories as unsettled conditions continue.
