A new police station has officially opened in HDh. Kumundhoo, marking an addition to the island’s policing infrastructure and providing a dedicated facility for law enforcement operations.
The opening ceremony was held on Wednesday, with Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed attending alongside senior officials from the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
MTCC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Jamsheed and members of the Kumundhoo Island Council were also present at the ceremony.
MTCC announced the opening through its official social media channels, highlighting the completion of the facility as part of its infrastructure development activities.
The new station is expected to support police operations on the island by providing a dedicated space for officers to carry out their responsibilities and assist members of the public.
Police stations in island communities play an important role in maintaining public safety, responding to incidents, investigating complaints and providing residents with access to law enforcement services.
The availability of dedicated policing facilities is particularly relevant in geographically dispersed communities such as those in the Maldives, where access to public services can be affected by the distance between islands.
MTCC, a state-owned company involved in infrastructure development across the country, undertakes projects ranging from harbour construction and coastal protection to public buildings and other essential facilities.
The company’s involvement in the Kumundhoo Police Station project forms part of its broader work supporting infrastructure development in island communities.
The official opening brings the facility into the island’s public service infrastructure, with the Maldives Police Service responsible for its policing operations.
Further details regarding the station’s staffing, operational arrangements and construction cost were not included in MTCC’s announcement.
