More than 39 members of Malé Water and Sewerage Company’s (MWSC) senior management have completed an intensive leadership programme at the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) training facility in K. Girifushi, combining executive development with emergency response and physically demanding exercises.
The two-and-a-half-day Leadership Enhancement Program brought together division heads, deputies and department heads from across MWSC, with the programme designed to strengthen coordination between the company’s leadership teams while developing skills required to manage complex operational situations.
MWSC Managing Director Hussain Fahmy said the programme represented an important step towards building greater teamwork, discipline, strategic thinking and resilience within the company’s executive leadership.
Participants underwent a series of leadership and command exercises focused on decision-making, crisis management and strategic thinking, placing senior officials in situations requiring them to work collectively and respond under pressure.
The programme also extended beyond conventional management training. As part of MWSC’s focus on workplace safety and emergency preparedness, participants received practical first aid and firefighting training, providing them with skills that could be used during emergencies at company facilities and operational sites.
Senior officials were also put through obstacle courses used for MNDF training, testing their physical endurance and ability to perform in challenging conditions.
One of the programme’s key exercises involved a shipboard emergency simulation, during which participants practised abandon-ship procedures. Senior managers entered the sea as part of the drill and followed emergency response and rescue procedures designed to replicate a real-life maritime incident.
Fahmy said the experience and knowledge gained through the programme would contribute to more efficient decision-making, strengthen operational teams and help develop leaders capable of responding to future challenges.
He said strengthening the capabilities of senior management would ultimately contribute to improving MWSC’s overall administration and the quality of services delivered to the public.
MWSC said feedback from participants had been positive, with senior managers highlighting stronger relationships between divisions and a greater sense of shared responsibility following the programme.
The training comes as MWSC continues to expand its utility operations and undertake major water and sewerage infrastructure projects. As a provider of essential public services, emergency preparedness and coordination between operational and management teams are particularly important during disruptions and other incidents affecting water and sewerage networks.
Fahmy also thanked President and Commander-in-Chief Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for prioritising the development of capable national leadership. He additionally expressed appreciation to the Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Force and MNDF leadership for facilitating and supporting the programme.
MWSC said the initiative forms part of its continued investment in developing a more cohesive and resilient leadership team capable of steering the company’s operational and strategic priorities.
