President Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that the relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka is deeply rooted in shared heritage, cultural connections, and strong people-to-people ties.
He made the remarks during a special ceremony held to exchange Memoranda of Understanding between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, attended by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Addressing the gathering, Muizzu said that while economic and policy cooperation remain important, the foundation of bilateral relations lies in the close connections between the people of both nations.
He noted that both countries have agreed to expand collaboration in areas such as cultural exchange, academic partnerships, and social development initiatives, with the aim of strengthening these longstanding ties.
The President described these connections as a key pillar supporting broader cooperation, including efforts in trade, education, and national development.
The ceremony formed part of a series of high-level engagements during the visit, where multiple agreements were concluded to enhance cooperation across various sectors.
Muizzu said reinforcing cultural and social links would continue to play a vital role as both countries work toward building a stronger and more dynamic partnership for the future.
