State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has temporarily relieved an employee of their duties and launched an internal investigation following allegations concerning a phone call made to the company’s Human Resources Department.
STELCO issued the statement in response to remarks made during RaajjeTV’s Fashairu programme, where allegations relating to the phone call were raised.
The company said the employee suspected of being connected to the incident has been removed from work duties while the circumstances surrounding the call are investigated.
STELCO did not disclose the identity of the employee or provide details about the contents of the alleged phone conversation.
The company said appropriate administrative and disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with its internal regulations once the investigation is completed, depending on its findings.
In its statement, STELCO stressed that its primary responsibility is the uninterrupted provision of essential public services and said its resources and attention would remain focused on fulfilling that responsibility.
As one of the country’s major state-owned utility companies, STELCO is responsible for electricity generation and distribution across the Greater Malé region and several other islands. Its operations are particularly critical in the capital region, where electricity infrastructure supports a large concentration of households, businesses and government services.
The company has recently been expanding generation infrastructure and investing in staff development as electricity demand continues to grow. STELCO has also said its engineering workforce is entirely Maldivian, with the company providing hundreds of training opportunities to employees in recent years.
Against this backdrop, STELCO said maintaining public confidence remains a priority and indicated that matters involving employee conduct would be addressed through established internal procedures.
The company said the investigation into the alleged phone call will determine the circumstances of the incident before any further administrative or corrective action is taken.
STELCO added that it remains committed to maintaining public trust while providing reliable, round-the-clock electricity services.
