Stormy weather forces flight delays and diversions at Velana Airport

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 11 hours ago

Severe weather sweeping across the Maldives has disrupted flight operations at Velana International Airport (VIA), with several international flights delayed and one aircraft forced to divert after being unable to land.

Multiple inbound aircraft were placed in holding patterns over the Maldives as heavy rain, strong winds, and poor visibility affected landing operations. Flights operated by Aeroflot, Qatar Airways, SriLankan Airlines, IndiGo, and FitsAir were among those experiencing delays, according to the airport’s live flight information system.

A flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Malé was diverted to Colombo, Sri Lanka, after weather conditions prevented a safe landing at VIA.

Meteorological observations from the airport showed wind speeds exceeding 35 knots, while intense rainfall significantly reduced visibility, creating challenging conditions for flight operations.

Meanwhile, the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a Yellow Alert covering the area from Haa Alif Atoll to Meemu Atoll until 11:30 a.m. today. The weather office warned of heavy rain, sustained winds of 25 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph during squalls. Sea conditions are also expected to remain very rough.

Passengers travelling through Velana International Airport are advised to check the latest flight status with their airlines or through the airport’s live flight information system before heading to the airport.
