Thimarafushi harbour project progresses as quay wall blocks are installed

By Hussain Shinan Published 4 hours ago

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has reported progress on the MVR 113.56 million harbour development project in Thimarafushi, Thaa Atoll, with installation of quay wall blocks currently underway.

The state-owned company confirmed that construction teams are continuing work on the harbour’s quay wall, an essential component of the development intended to improve berthing facilities and maritime access to the island.

The government-funded project includes extensive improvements to the existing harbour infrastructure, covering dredging, construction of an outer breakwater, installation of revetments and harbour lighting, as well as the development of surrounding areas to improve passenger convenience.

Quay walls provide reinforced structures along the waterfront where vessels can berth, allowing passengers and cargo to be transferred safely between boats and the shore.

The installation of these structures represents an important stage of harbour construction, particularly for islands where maritime transport remains essential for daily travel, trade and access to public services.

According to MTCC, the project was awarded to the company in September 2025 at a contract value of MVR 113.56 million, with a stipulated completion period of 540 days.

The Thimarafushi harbour development was originally awarded to MTCC in 2022, with physical construction beginning in July 2023, before the latest contract arrangement was made.

The company expects the completed development to address longstanding difficulties faced by vessels when entering, navigating and docking at the island’s harbour.

Improved harbour access is also expected to support economic activity in Thimarafushi by facilitating the movement of passengers, goods and essential supplies.

As an inhabited island in Thaa Atoll, Thimarafushi depends on reliable maritime connections for transportation and the delivery of services, making harbour infrastructure an important part of its development.

The improvements are particularly relevant to residents travelling between islands for healthcare, education, employment and other essential purposes.

MTCC has also highlighted the potential benefits of the project for the island’s healthcare infrastructure, with improved maritime accessibility expected to support the movement of patients, medical personnel and supplies.

Harbour development remains a major component of public infrastructure investment across the Maldives, where geographical separation between islands makes dependable sea transport essential for economic and social activity.

Breakwaters and revetments are designed to protect harbour facilities and shorelines from wave action and erosion, while dredging helps maintain navigable depths for vessels using the harbour.

The installation of harbour lighting and improvements to passenger areas are intended to make the facilities safer and more convenient for residents and visitors.

MTCC continues to undertake harbour construction, dredging, land reclamation and coastal protection projects across the country as part of its infrastructure development operations.

The company’s latest update confirms that quay wall installation is progressing, although the overall percentage of construction completed has not been specified.

Once completed, the Thimarafushi harbour development is expected to provide improved maritime facilities and strengthen transport connectivity for the island’s residents and businesses.
