WAMCO prepares to introduce waste management services in Nolhivaranfaru

By Hussain Shinan Published 2 hours ago

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has held discussions with the HDh. Nolhivaranfaru Island Council as preparations continue to establish formal waste management services on the island.

Senior officials from WAMCO met with council representatives to review the waste management situation in Nolhivaranfaru and identify measures that could address challenges currently faced by the community.

A key focus of the meeting was the planned introduction of official waste management services in Nolhivaranfaru, including discussions on the arrangements required to establish a more structured system for handling waste on the island.

The two sides also explored potential solutions to existing waste management difficulties and considered how services could be developed to meet the island’s requirements.

The discussions come as efforts continue to strengthen organised waste collection and management systems across the atolls, where geography and limited land availability can make the handling, storage and transportation of waste particularly challenging.

For island communities, establishing a formal waste management system involves more than routine collection. Effective services require coordination between councils and service providers covering collection, segregation, storage, processing and the movement of waste that cannot be treated locally.

WAMCO plays a central role in the country’s waste management sector and provides collection and other waste-related services in several parts of the Maldives. The state-owned company has also been expanding its engagement with island councils as the government works to improve waste management infrastructure and services outside the Greater Malé region.

Improving waste management remains an important environmental priority for the Maldives due to the country’s limited land area and the potential impact of improperly managed waste on residential communities, beaches and surrounding marine ecosystems.

Local councils are particularly important to the process, as they work directly with communities and are positioned to identify island-specific requirements before new services are introduced.

The latest meeting between WAMCO and Nolhivaranfaru Council represents an initial step towards developing a structured waste management arrangement for the island, with discussions focusing both on immediate challenges and preparations for the commencement of formal services.
