MET Office Forecasts Sea Swell — Police Recommend Four-Wheelers on Sinamale Bridge from 13:30 to 17:00 Today

By Ahmed Ashraf Published June 28, 2025

The Maldives Police Service has issued a safety advisory for commuters using the Sinamale Bridge and adjacent highway after the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) forecast significant sea swelling and high waves between 13:30 and 17:00 today.

The MET Office warns of potential wave surges associated with local swells during today’s high tide period .

Police recommend that travelers:

  • Use four-wheeled vehicles exclusively during the advisory window (13:30–17:00).
  • Exercise heightened caution on bridge and highway routes, as rough sea conditions may blow sand, rocks, and water onto the roadway.

Sinamale Bridge, linking Malé and Hulhumalé, is particularly vulnerable to tidal swells. In past instances, daily swell events have swept debris onto the roadway, leading to vehicle damage and travel disruptions.

High waves along the central atolls often coincide with the western monsoon season. While unpredictable in timing, swell activity can fluctuate rapidly, impacting commuters during peak travel hours . The MET Office issues white alert levels to caution the public about these transient but dangerous conditions.
