The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed sheet piling works under the first phase of the redevelopment of the northern side of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, marking another milestone in one of the capital’s largest ongoing road infrastructure projects.
The project forms part of the government’s broader efforts to ease chronic traffic congestion in Malé by upgrading the city’s outer ring road network.
Providing the latest progress update, MTCC said sub-base works on Segments 4 and 5 have now been completed, with crews currently laying the aggregate base course in preparation for asphalt paving.
The company added that the final capping concrete works on the newly constructed quay wall are expected to be completed later this week.
Construction of pavements and dedicated parking areas is also progressing alongside the road works, according to MTCC.
The contractor said asphalt paving is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, with the required machinery already mobilised to the site. While acknowledging that the project’s completion timeline was revised due to various factors, MTCC said work is now back on schedule and is expected to be completed by July 26.
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment is one of the government’s key transport infrastructure projects and is expected to significantly improve traffic flow around the capital by expanding one of Malé’s busiest coastal roads.
Speaking previously about the project, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu described the road as a vital component of the Malé Ring Road concept, which he said was originally initiated during his tenure as Minister of Housing and Infrastructure.
According to the President, once the ring road is fully completed, Boduthakurufaanu Magu will function as a wider two-way route around the capital, reducing pressure on the city’s inner roads and improving traffic circulation.
Earlier phases of the project saw the completion of the section stretching from Izzudheen Magu to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal. The current phase focuses on extending the upgraded roadway from the ferry terminal to the North Harbour.
President Muizzu has also announced that once the ongoing phase is completed, work will begin on modernising the remaining stretch of Boduthakurufaanu Magu between the North Harbour and Dharumavantha Hospital, completing another major section of the planned ring road.
The redevelopment includes road widening through land reclamation, construction of a new quay wall, upgraded utility infrastructure, pedestrian walkways, street lighting and additional motorcycle parking, with the project expected to improve both traffic management and the capital’s waterfront landscape.
