The Maldives cast a cultural spell over Dubai on Monday evening with the debut of its first-ever Maldivian Evening at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), held at the immersive Theatre of Digital Arts (TODA) in Souk Madinat Jumeirah. The event served as a vibrant celebration of the Maldives’ cultural, artistic, and hospitality strengths, drawing global tourism stakeholders into the heart of the island nation’s identity.
As visuals of pristine atolls lit up the theatre’s digital dome and a dedicated Virtual Reality (VR) room offered an up-close look at island life, the evening invited attendees to see beyond the Maldives’ famed turquoise waters and luxury resorts.
Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, speaking at the event, described the Maldives as a destination “rich in stories, art, and human connection,” and emphasized the importance of sharing its authentic culture with the world. “We want the world to know our traditions, to hear our stories, and to feel the warmth of our people,” he said.
The night unfolded with powerful cultural performances, including a stage adaptation of the beloved folklore Dhonhiyala and Alifulhu, traditional dances, and a short film on the legendary Maldivian figure Koimalaa.
Adding another layer of richness to the evening were performances by local artists and creatives. Guests were treated to traditional storytelling that echoed the voices of island communities, while celebrated painter Ali Ishaan, also known as Khuraha Raa’ppe, showcased live artwork that brought Maldivian folklore to life in vivid color. Meanwhile, the band Sky Rock delivered energetic musical performances, injecting the room with rhythm and soul that reflected the diversity and vibrancy of Maldivian talent.
A major highlight of the evening was a traditional fashion show, with models gracing the stage in garments designed by renowned Maldivian designer and choreographer Jaadullah Ismail. The collection paid homage to the nation’s cultural roots, featuring dresses inspired by the colors of the ocean, local crafts, and Maldivian traditions.
Ibrahim Shiuree, Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), also spoke at the event, highlighting the nation’s evolving tourism strategy. He explained how recent data-driven initiatives are aiming to position the Maldives as a destination where culture and community are as central as its natural beauty.
The event marked a milestone in how the Maldives presents itself on the world stage — not just as a picture-perfect getaway, but as a nation with a vibrant identity, a proud heritage, and a creative spirit ready to be explored.
