President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has praised the Scout movement in the Maldives as a powerful force that brings young people together across the country’s dispersed islands, describing it as a bridge of unity that transcends geographical boundaries.
In a message commemorating the 70th anniversary of Scouting in the Maldives, the President paid tribute to generations of Scouts, leaders and volunteers who have helped build and sustain the movement since its establishment in the country.
Reflecting on the significance of the milestone, President Muizzu said the values at the heart of Scouting continue to play an important role in shaping responsible and self-reliant citizens. He noted that the movement encourages young people to develop strong moral principles, a spirit of service, and a willingness to help others.
According to the President, Scouting has helped connect communities from the northernmost to the southernmost atolls, fostering friendships and solidarity among Maldivian youth despite the country’s vast geographical spread.
He said the dedication, courage and willingness to serve displayed by Scouts embody qualities that have long been cherished in Maldivian society. These values, he added, continue to inspire younger generations and strengthen community bonds.
President Muizzu also highlighted the Scout movement’s longstanding contribution to national service, particularly during times of crisis. He noted that Scouts have repeatedly stepped forward to assist communities during emergencies and disasters, including the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004.
The President described the movement as an outstanding example of volunteerism and humanitarian service, saying its members have consistently demonstrated leadership, preparedness and initiative whenever the nation has faced difficult circumstances.
Drawing from his own experience, President Muizzu recalled being involved in Scouting during his school years and credited the movement with teaching lessons that continued to guide him throughout life.
He said the Cub Scout motto “Do Your Best” and the Scout motto “Be Prepared” helped instill discipline, resilience and practical life skills that remain valuable today.
The President expressed confidence that such experiences remain highly relevant for modern youth and stressed the importance of preserving the true spirit and purpose of the Scout movement for future generations.
Concluding his message, President Muizzu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Scout Association of Maldives and its efforts to expand Scouting activities nationwide. He assured the association and its members that the government would continue to cooperate with initiatives aimed at strengthening and advancing the movement across the country.
The Scout movement was officially introduced to the Maldives 70 years ago and remains one of the country’s largest and longest-running volunteer youth organizations.
