President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said he wants to transform the People’s National Congress (PNC) into a model political party that reflects strong democratic values, with greater participation from members, particularly women and young people.
Speaking on “Nation Chat,” a podcast produced by Public Service Media (PSM), the President outlined his vision for the ruling party following the conclusion of its internal elections earlier this month.
Describing the recently concluded party polls as a significant milestone, President Muizzu said the elections laid the groundwork for the PNC’s future political activities by establishing representation across the party’s various organisational structures.
He noted that when his administration took office on November 17, 2023, the PNC had approximately 3,000 members. Since then, he said, sustained membership drives have helped expand the party to around 70,000 members, making it the country’s largest political party.
Official figures from the Elections Commission’s political party registry show the PNC currently has 67,579 registered members, placing it ahead of all other political parties operating in the Maldives.
According to President Muizzu, the next major step will be the party’s Congress meeting, scheduled to be held from September 15 to 18, where the PNC’s permanent organisational structure is expected to be finalised.
He said preparations are already underway following the election of representatives to all organs of the party through the internal polls concluded on July 11.
President Muizzu said the party aims to strengthen its internal democratic processes and create a structure that encourages broader participation while remaining focused on serving the public.
“God willing, we are working to strengthen the internal democracy of this party, shaping it into one that is fully geared toward serving the public through democratic values, and one that ensures the complete participation of youth and women,” he said.
He added that political parties should function in this manner and expressed his hope that the PNC would become an example for others to follow.
“This is exactly how every political party should operate. We want to lead by example,” the President said.
The President also assured party members and supporters that the upcoming High Council meeting would demonstrate the party’s commitment to democratic governance by showcasing what he described as a comprehensive and transparent internal democratic process.
The PNC has experienced rapid growth since forming the government in late 2023, consolidating its position as the Maldives’ largest political party. The September High Council meeting is expected to shape the party’s long-term organisational framework and set its direction ahead of future political activities.
