President’s Office Chief Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) has announced that he will seek re-election as a vice president of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) during the party’s upcoming Congress in September.
The PNC is scheduled to hold its National Congress from September 15 to 18, where members of the party’s Senior Council will elect the party’s president and vice presidents as part of a broader effort to finalise the party’s leadership structure following its recent internal elections.
Mundhu, who currently serves as one of the PNC’s seven vice presidents, confirmed his decision to contest another term through a statement shared on social media.
In his announcement, he expressed gratitude for what he described as the opportunity to serve both the party and the public, recalling that he was first elected as a PNC vice president during the party’s inaugural Congress at what he said was a challenging period for the nationalist movement.
He also thanked President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his leadership, stating that he believes the President’s vision offers the best path toward stability and prosperity for the Maldives.
Mundhu said his decision to seek another term is driven by his commitment to supporting President Muizzu’s leadership and working towards securing the President’s re-election in the 2028 presidential election.
“Believing that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership is the best path for the nation to achieve stability and prosperity, I have decided to contest for the position of PNC Vice President with the determination to work to the best of my ability toward the major objective of re-electing the President in 2028,” he said.
Several other senior figures have also entered the race for the party’s vice presidency.
Among those expected to contest are Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujaau, who is also an incumbent vice president of the party, Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed, Nilandhoo MP Fatimath Saudha, and Minister of Sports Abdulla Rafiu.
The upcoming Congress follows the conclusion of the PNC’s internal elections in July, which elected representatives to the party’s various organisational bodies. Party leaders have said the September gathering will finalise the PNC’s organisational structure and elect senior office-bearers.
The PNC has experienced significant growth since assuming office in November 2023 and is currently the largest registered political party in the Maldives. According to the Elections Commission’s latest political party registry, the ruling party has 67,579 members.
