MMA holds talks with IMF and World Bank officials during annual meetings in Bangkok

By Hussain Shinan Published 4 hours ago

A delegation from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has held discussions with representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank Group and other international financial institutions during the 2026 IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.

The meetings, held from October 12 to 18, brought together representatives from central banks, finance ministries, international financial institutions and development organisations to discuss global economic developments, financial stability and cooperation on economic policy.

The Maldivian delegation was led by MMA Deputy Governor Aishath Asna Hamdi, who participated in engagements aimed at strengthening institutional relationships and exploring opportunities for further technical cooperation.

According to the central bank, the delegation held discussions with officials from the IMF, World Bank Group, regional partners and other key stakeholders on a range of economic and financial matters.

The engagements focused on exchanging perspectives on economic developments, strengthening cooperation between institutions and identifying opportunities for technical assistance and capacity development.

Such discussions provide an opportunity for central banks to engage with international financial institutions on policy challenges, financial sector development and measures to strengthen economic resilience.

For the Maldives, cooperation with international financial institutions remains particularly relevant given the country’s dependence on tourism, exposure to external economic developments and the importance of maintaining monetary and financial stability.

As the country’s central bank, MMA is responsible for formulating and implementing monetary policy, overseeing the banking sector and supporting the stability of the financial system.

Its engagement with international institutions also contributes to efforts to strengthen regulatory practices, develop institutional expertise and improve the country’s capacity to respond to economic challenges.

The IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings serve as a major international forum for discussions on economic growth, financial stability, development financing and emerging risks affecting economies around the world.

The meetings also provide opportunities for smaller economies, including the Maldives, to engage directly with international financial institutions and regional partners on matters affecting their economic outlook.

Technical assistance and capacity development are important areas of cooperation for central banks, particularly in strengthening financial supervision, economic analysis, forecasting and institutional operations.

These areas are directly relevant to MMA’s responsibilities in monitoring economic conditions and maintaining confidence in the Maldivian financial system.

Alongside Deputy Governor Aishath Asna Hamdi, the Maldivian delegation included Aishath Nadhiya, Senior Executive Director of Banking and Market Operations, and Dhaha Shuaib, an economist in the Economic Surveillance and Forecasting Section.

Also participating were Fasahath Sabig, Manager of the Banks Offsite Supervision Section, and Moohath Mohamed Rasheed, Assistant Manager at the Governor’s Office.

The composition of the delegation reflected the central bank’s involvement in banking operations, financial supervision, economic surveillance and institutional coordination.

MMA described the engagements as constructive, highlighting the importance of maintaining dialogue with international partners and exploring further opportunities to strengthen institutional capabilities.

The central bank did not announce any new financing arrangements or formal agreements arising from the discussions.

The meetings nevertheless provided an opportunity for MMA to reinforce its relationships with international financial institutions and engage in discussions relevant to the Maldives’ economic and financial development.
