State Trading Organisation (STO) has introduced GE HealthCare’s Vscan portable ultrasound devices to the Maldivian market, offering healthcare providers a more mobile approach to diagnostic imaging that could expand access to ultrasound services across the islands.
The devices were officially unveiled at a ceremony held at Hotel Jen by STO Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim and GE HealthCare Head of Sales for South Asia Jagdish Babu.

The introduction marks a shift from conventional ultrasound systems that are typically based in dedicated consultation or imaging rooms. Vscan devices are designed to bring ultrasound capabilities directly to the patient’s side, allowing healthcare professionals to conduct scans in a wider range of clinical settings.
STO’s healthcare team sees significant potential for the technology in the Maldives, where the dispersed geography and small populations of many islands can make access to specialised diagnostic services challenging. Portable ultrasound technology could enable healthcare facilities to extend imaging capabilities without relying solely on larger, fixed systems.
The newly introduced models can work with Apple and Android smartphones as well as laptops. Scanned images can also be shared using the DICOM standard, which is widely used for storing, transmitting and managing medical imaging information.
GE HealthCare ultrasound systems are already used at hospitals across the Maldives, while STO serves as the company’s authorised distributor in the country.
STO said it has also invested in strengthening local technical capacity to provide sustainable after-sales support for GE HealthCare equipment. Its biomedical team includes specialised engineers trained across individual GE HealthCare modalities, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), mammography and ultrasound systems.
The company also highlighted the participation of Maldivian female engineers within its certified biomedical engineering team, as it builds local expertise to maintain increasingly sophisticated medical equipment.
The launch of Vscan adds to STO’s portfolio of healthcare technologies and forms part of the company’s broader efforts to introduce new medical solutions to the Maldives.
With healthcare services spread across an archipelago of geographically isolated islands, compact diagnostic equipment could play an increasingly important role in bringing imaging closer to patients and supporting healthcare professionals outside major hospitals.
